French architect Le Corbusier was one of the first theorists of mass standard construction. He presented the idea of a "residential unit" (a ready-made residential block) in 1925. Such blocks can be used like a lego-constructor to build a house of the required size and shape.
Corbusier believed that architecture should be functional and that "houses are machines for living" and was incredibly popular in post-war France.
In 1969−1970s the wave of large-scale model construction covered all Europe.
